Listen to this article Proposed Ban On Assault-Style Firearms By Canadian Government
Introduction
The Canadian government has announced a proposal to ban assault-style firearms in the country, subject to legislation passing in Parliament.

Regulation of Firearm Classification
The scheme involves using the Firearms Act to regulate firearm classification prior to their sale in Canada.
Protection of Families and Communities
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino stated that the proposed measures aim to safeguard families and communities, rather than singling out responsible gun owners and hunters.
Firearms Advisory Committee
The government has also pledged to establish a firearms advisory committee to review the classification of existing firearms on the market, consisting of industry leaders, Indigenous people, rural and northern residents, gun control advocates, and law enforcement representatives. The committee will provide recommendations that will guide the government’s decision to expand the classifications of firearms for the ban.
Future Legalization Prevention
Mendicino has promised that the government will enact measures to make it difficult for future governments to legalize assault-style firearms again.
Criticism of Dropping Plan
However, gun-control group PolySeSouvient has criticized the government for dropping its plan to ban an additional 482 assault-style firearms that were identified last year, as the proposed ban only applies to future models and could be easily circumvented.
