Options for Continuing the Pregnancy

The couple was faced with a difficult decision. They could choose to continue the pregnancy, receive the best care possible, and even deliver the baby early. However, Alabama law prohibits abortions at all stages of pregnancy, which meant they couldn’t terminate the pregnancy in the state. While the hospital approved the abortion, a higher-level committee denied permission, leaving the couple with no option but to seek abortion care in another state.

Traveling for Abortion Care

The couple had to travel to Richmond, Virginia, as no hospital in Alabama would perform the procedure. The hospital in Virginia provided free housing, but the couple was left with a bill of $2,089 from Virginia Commonwealth University, even though Shannon’s insurance covered the procedure.

Abortion Restrictions in Alabama

Alabama is one of the 15 states that have nearly ceased all abortion services since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June last year. The decision ended federal protections for abortion rights, making it more challenging for women to access safe and legal abortion care in many states. The strict abortion laws in Alabama, combined with the limited availability of providers, has left many women with few options for reproductive healthcare.

Conclusion

Kelly Shannon and her husband’s heartbreaking experience highlights the challenges women and families face in states with strict abortion laws. It also underscores the importance of protecting and expanding access to reproductive healthcare services for all women, regardless of where they live. Women should have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies and their pregnancies without interference from politicians or committees.
