Reports from Iranian media indicate that an assassin killed Ayatollah Abbas-Ali Soleimani, a prominent member of the Assembly of Experts for Leadership of Iran, at a bank in the northern city of Babolsar on Wednesday morning.
Soleimani was a former representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, officiating on behalf of Khamenei at a provincial level. The Assembly of Experts is a powerful clerical body that supervises, appoints, and can theoretically remove the supreme leader.
As reported by the Fars news agency, authorities have detained the killer of Soleimani. The governor of Mazandaran, Mahmoud Hosseinipour, reported through Iranian state media that a security guard at the bank killed Soleimani. According to initial investigations, the attacker fired randomly and was unaware of Soleimani’s presence. The motive of the attacker remains unclear, according to Hosseinipour.
This assassination comes after months of intensive anti-government protests in Iran’s southern province of Sistan-Baluchistan. These protests were sparked by the death in custody of a young Iranian woman in September and have led to widespread unrest in one of Iran’s poorest provinces.
