A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Tajikistan early Thursday, causing a ripple effect across the border in China’s far western Xinjiang region. The epicenter of the quake was located in a lightly populated, remote area of Tajikistan, approximately 67 kilometers (41 miles) west of Murghob, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Details of the Earthquake
Scientists measured the earthquake’s depth to be 20 kilometers (12 miles) below ground level, and it took place in the Pamir Mountains, where the district capital of Mughrob is located. This town, renowned for its high altitude and rugged terrain, has a population of a few thousand people. The China Earthquake Networks Center stated that the quake was of 7.2 magnitude and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). However, it’s worth noting that measurements taken by different agencies can vary.
Impact of the Earthquake
The earthquake was felt strongly across the border in some regions of Kashgar prefecture and Kizilsu Kyrgyz autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang. Despite the tremors, there have been no reports of any casualties or damages so far. According to state media CCTV, which cited local information officers, the situation is under control and emergency response teams are on high alert.
